Hollywood in mourning, "Mary Poppins" actress Glynis Johns has passed

Glynis Johns, best known for her role as Winifred Banks' mother in Mary Poppins, has died aged 100.

The British actress, whose career spanned more than 60 years, died on Thursday in Los Angeles, her manager confirmed. She appeared in dozens of films and was also a theater performer.

Her manager Mitch Clem said in a statement that her death was a "somber day for Hollywood".

Johns starred opposite Dame Julie Andrews in the classic 1964 Disney musical Mary Poppins, which won five Oscars.

Her manager of 25 years, Clem, said her "light shone brightly for 100 years".

"Glynis was a brilliant woman and loved her performances, impacting millions of lives. Today is a dark day for Hollywood. "Not only do we mourn the death of our beloved Glynis, but we also mourn the end of the golden age of Hollywood," he said during the tributes.

She also won a Tony Award in 1973 for her portrayal of Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical A Little Night Music, in which she sang Send In The Clowns. Sondheim wrote the song specifically for Johns to sing, however she lost the part to Elizabeth Taylor in the 1977 film version.

"I've always said that Send In The Clowns was the best gift I've ever been given ," she told the AP news agency.
