Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy gathered all his friends this past Wednesday for a farewell party before going to prison.
Local media reported that among Sarkozy's guests were, of course, his lawyers, the outgoing French Minister of Culture and his long-time collaborator, Rachida Dati, the mayor of La Baule, Franck Louvrier (from the Republican party), as well as Emmanuelle Mignon, chief of staff at the Élysée.
During the celebration, Sarkozy took the opportunity to once again proclaim his innocence, comparing himself to two of the most famous figures of injustice in history: the Dreyfus affair, one of the greatest judicial errors that shook France at the end of the 19th century, and Edmond Dantes, the unjustly convicted protagonist of Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Count of Monte Cristo."
"I don't want your sympathy, but your indignation. I am touched by this case, but this is just the beginning of the story. What happened to me could happen to anyone," he said.
