An unauthorized biography reveals two extramarital affairs of the United Kingdom's longest-serving prime minister...
Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" who led the United Kingdom as prime minister from May 4, 1979 to November 28, 1990, is alleged to have had two extramarital affairs while married to her husband, Sir Denis Thatcher.
This is revealed in a new book just published in the UK, The Incidental Feminist, by journalist Tina Godwin. In the book, published specifically to mark the 100th anniversary of the former prime minister's birth, Godwin claims that the first of Margaret's two extramarital affairs took place during her early years as an MP, while the second was with a cabinet colleague.
Godwin, speaking at a recent book fair in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, said he discovered the secret connections through highly reliable sources, including novelist and former Conservative Party minister Jonathan Aitken.
Both of their names are well-known to the public. One of the two men who managed to seduce Margaret Thatcher, played by Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady and Gillian Anderson in The Crown, was Sir Humphrey Atkins, an MP for Spelthorn with whom Thatcher allegedly had a long-term affair.
Sir Humphrey Atkins, who died in 1996, was a charming man who served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under the Iron Lady's government between 1979 and 1981. Queen Elizabeth also gave him a peerage in 1987, making him Baron Colnbrook.
Former minister Jonathan Aitken says today that rumors about that sensational affair circulated in political circles at the time, because many people thought that Humphrey Atkins was not up to the tasks she entrusted to him, and the only explanation everyone offered was that Thatcher was fascinated by his physical appearance.
According to Aitken, this theory is stronger today than it was then. According to other sources Tina Godwin spoke to, the British prime minister's other "special" friend was Lord Timothy Bell, her public relations manager, who passed away in 2019.
He was also very handsome in his youth, but above all, a man with a mind as brilliant as it was diabolical, so much so that even today it is said that he was the one who "built" Thatcher's public image, and he is still called today as the "founding father of fake news."
Some witnesses say they had noticed intimate gestures between them that only occurred when there was great physical proximity, such as his placing his hand on her knee under the table during gala dinners.
Even Lord Moore, the author of Margaret Thatcher's official, authorized biography, admitted that he had heard rumors about the former prime minister's affair with Atkins, but never found definitive proof. Meanwhile, he described the hypothesis of a secret relationship between Margaret and Lord Bell as "extremely unlikely."
These may seem like seemingly small revelations, but if true, they rewrite the image of the cold, honest woman still associated with the Conservative Party's longest-serving prime minister since the late 19th century.
In fact, it has always been thought that she was not attracted to any other man except her husband, Dennis, whom she called "the guiding thread of my life," and with whom she had two children, Mark and Carol.
It is also a fact that neither of them ever caused any scandal in the decades they spent in the public eye, nor during their marriage, which lasted more than 50 years. However, Tina Godwin's latest book also tells of the "unusual friendship" that Denis Thatcher had with the model and showgirl Mandy Rice-Davies.
The latter became famous for her involvement in the 1963 sex scandal, which ended the careers of several politicians, and which also involved Prince Philip himself, Queen Elizabeth's husband, whom some claimed to have recognized in a photo taken at a questionable party.
