Gerard Butler and Gal Gadot Expelled from Venice Film Festival for Supporting

A clear invitation to withdraw “invitations to the festival of Gerard Butler, Gal Gadot and any artist or celebrity who publicly and actively supports genocide. Space should be made available to one of our delegations who will parade on the red carpet with the Palestinian flag.”

This is one of the demands for the Venice Film Festival, made by a group of actors, directors and activists united under the acronym V4P (Venice4Palestine), the first document signed by over 1,500 personalities from the cinema industry that demands a clear position of the festival on the tragedy taking place in Gaza, while the 82nd edition is expected to start on Wednesday and will last until September 6, writes Corriere della Sera.

On the other hand, the response emphasizes that "the Venice Biennale and the Venice International Film Festival have always been, throughout its history, a place for open discussion and sensitivity towards the most pressing issues in society and the world," while mentioning the speeches of President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and Artistic Director Alberto Barbera.

In the opinion of the signatories, this is too little: “The Biennale’s official communication continues to choose not to mention Palestine and the ongoing genocide, much less the state of Israel that is violating it. If the Biennale truly wants to be a ‘place for open and sensitive debate’, then this space must first be a space for truth. We clearly appreciate the presence of films like ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ by director Kaouther Ben Hania, but on the other hand we wonder how we can pay homage to figures like Gerard Butler and Gal Gadot, protagonists of an out-of-competition film, who ideologically and materially support Israel’s political and military actions.”

The letter, which was signed under the name Venice4Palestine, expresses satisfaction at receiving the response from the two autonomous and parallel sections of the festival, “both supportive and constructive responses.” It also requests that Palestinian artists be given space during the opening ceremony to provide direct testimony.

At the same time, support will be expressed for the Stop Genocide-Free Palestine demonstration to be held on August 30 at 5:00 PM at Lido.

In addition to the request to withdraw Gadot and Butler's invitations, the call is also for "the Biennale to take clear actions and positions and to cease cooperation with organizations that support the Israeli government, directly or indirectly."
