A Birmingham man is the second in the world to have three genitalia.
After his death, the 78-year-old donated his body to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Birmingham where students made the rare discovery during the examination.
"The old man spent his life without ever learning that he had three organs," Metro reports.
According to university doctors, 1 in 5-6 million people are born with more than one penis, about 100 cases of diphallia (having two organs) have been recorded worldwide. The 78-year-old is the second in history to record a case of triphallia.
Doctors discovered that only one of them was functional as the other two were attached inside the skin of the scrotum, which explains why the 78-year-old was unaware of this peculiarity.
He was about 180 cm tall, of average build and on first examination everything seemed normal. During the autopsy, "two small penises" were discovered. They were connected by the same urethra, which meant that the waters passed "from the second organ before going to the main one".
Scientists of the Journal of Medical Case Reports wrote: "These genital morphological abnormalities may not have been identified during his lifetime. However, he may have lived with functional deficits as a result of abnormal anatomy which may include urinary tract infections, erectile or fertility problems."
They also cited a 2020 case of triphallia when a 3-month-old baby was diagnosed with the same health problem.
