Jackie Kennedy couldn't calm down after this phone call...
In J. Randy Taraborrelli's new biography, Jackie: Public, Private, Secret, the author compiled almost 25 years of research and interviews with her family, friends and exes into an in-depth portrait of the former First Lady. As such, it inevitably touches on her husband President John F. Kennedy's alleged affair with Marilyn Monroe, which Taraborrelli claims consisted of a weekend getaway in March 1962.
In fact, the book also details a brief but poignant phone call between Kennedy and Monroe a month after the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes star got engaged to the then-president. So what happened during the call?
Taraborrelli notes in the book that in April 1962, Kennedy received a phone call in her bedroom from Monroe while at the family's mansion in Massachusetts. The actress, whose distinctive voice was recognized by Kennedy, had called asking for "Jack," prompting the First Lady to verify that she was calling Monroe. This prompted the Seven Year Itch star to reply: "Am I talking to Jackie?" before asking if Kennedy could relay a message to her husband that she had called. However, Monroe noted that she just wanted to say hello.
And as Taraborrelli said, a surprised Kennedy said she would relay the message before hanging up. Still, the brief exchange, which the author says took place just four months before Monroe's death, left Kennedy with many questions.
"There was something about that phone call. She later told family members that Marilyn's voice had a haunting quality that really stuck with her. And it's not like they had any deep conversations. But it was 10 years with question mark, was she really Marilyn Monroe?" the biographer told Fox News.
After Monroe's death at age 36 that August, Tarborrelli noted to Fox that while Kennedy was "haunted" by Monroe's untimely death, she also always felt the star was a "disaster waiting to happen" and " someone too vulnerable, too weak, to be used by JFK."
