Famous Hollywood actress Michelle Pfeiffer has set social media ablaze with a strong and unexpected statement against billionaire Bill Gates and a newly FDA-approved product called "Apeel."
The FDA is the American Food and Drug Administration, and according to the actress, this 'invisible protector' that is applied to fruits and vegetables to extend their life is also spreading to organic products without the knowledge of consumers.
"Now even organic products are covered in something we can't see or wash off," Pfeiffer wrote in an Instagram post, accompanied by an alarming video that has been circulating online.
Foreign media write that "Apeel" is a plant-based substance that creates an invisible layer on the surface of fruits and vegetables, slowing down decay and extending their shelf life. The product has been approved as safe for consumption by the FDA and is already used in dozens of countries.
But the famous actress's concern is not just about the makeup, but about the lack of transparency.
"No one warns us that this is on our food," she said, raising doubts about the impact of such products on human health and the ethics behind them.
But what does Bill Gates have to do with it?
Apeel has received financial support from its inception from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which awarded the company a $100,000 grant in 2012. Although Gates is not a shareholder and is no longer involved in the company, his connection to the product was enough for the actress to mention him directly in her accusations.
Meanwhile, the company has responded by calling Pfeiffer's statements "dangerous and misinforming," and has emphasized that Apeel's protection is completely edible and can be removed by washing and rubbing.
