As the year 2026 approaches, we look back at the developments of the year we are leaving behind. Of great interest is what two famous fortune tellers predicted: Nostradamus and Baba Vanga. And above all, were they correct?
NOSTRADAMUS' PREDICTIONS
England's 'cruel wars' and great plagues of the past are returning
Nostradamus said: "When those of the European countries see England rise again to her throne, there will be fierce wars. The kingdom will be marked by such fierce wars, enemies from within and without will appear. A great plague from the past will return, no enemy will be more deadly under the heavens."
England has not been directly involved in any wars this year. The war in Ukraine continues, while the conflict in Gaza has intensified. Has England faced "internal and external enemies"? There is no apparent external adversary that has launched a massive attack on the country, but that does not mean that England has been free from attacks on civilians or infrastructure.
From the stabbing attacks in Huntingdon (Cambridge) and Heaton Park (Manchester) in the autumn, to a series of cyberattacks that left major retail chains paralyzed, England has faced real dangers.
As for the "great plague," it hasn't returned with a vengeance as Nostradamus predicted, but the country is preparing for a possible "super-flu" outbreak this winter.
Conflict in international politics
Nostradamus also predicted that “great powers will clash” in 2025 and that there will be “a decline in the influence of traditional Western countries and the rise of new global powers.” This year has indeed seen great power clashes, with Vladimir Putin declaring last week that he is ready for war with Europe.
It is equally difficult to dismiss the prediction that the West is losing its global influence. The rise of China is nothing new, but its economic growth continues. In 2025, there were also several incidents in the US and Europe involving Chinese spies trying to gain access to sensitive government information.
Medical developments
Nostradamus predicted "significant improvements in the prevention and treatment of disease" in 2025, as well as further development of medical technology.
Scientists' progress in creating a vaccine against tuberculosis is a typical example, while the proliferation of weight-loss drugs, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, is expected to play a role in treating obesity, a major global health problem.
