Tourists could soon be required to pay a €2 ticket to visit the Trevi Fountain, one of the most famous architectural masterpieces in the center of Rome. According to Italian news agency Ansa, the measure is expected to come into effect from January 7, with only permanent residents of the Italian capital exempted from the fee.
In recent months, Rome authorities have already imposed restrictions on the flow of visitors, allowing no more than 400 people at a time near the fountain, which was built about three centuries ago. The aim of these measures is to protect the monument and manage mass tourism in one of the city's most frequented spots.
However, the Municipality of Rome has clarified that there is still no final decision on the introduction of an entrance ticket. In a reaction to reports in the Italian media, the municipal authorities stressed that this remains only one of the options long considered for managing visitors and preserving cultural heritage.
If approved, the measure would mark a significant change in access to one of Rome's most iconic symbols, visited every year by millions of tourists from around the world.
