Do you know what the most expensive pizza in the world is? No, it's not the gold-leafed one in fancy restaurants in New York or Tokyo. Its story is connected to an ordinary portion from a fast food chain in Florida - but with one extraordinary detail: payment in bitcoin.
In May 2010, developer Lazlo Hanjez posted an unusual offer on an online forum – he promised $10,000 in bitcoin to anyone who would bring him two pizzas. At the time, the cryptocurrency was still in its infancy and the amount was a modest $41. A user accepted the offer, ordered a pizza, and thus the world's first bitcoin purchase was made.
No one could have imagined that those 10,000 BTC would later be worth over $1 billion, making this transaction one of the most famous in the history of modern economics.
Today, May 22nd, is known as “Bitcoin Pizza Day,” an anniversary commemorating the moment when two ordinary pizzas forever changed the perception of digital money.
While many people might regret such a "loss," Hanjez says he has no regrets — for him, this was the first proof that Bitcoin could have real value in the market.
So the next time someone pays you for a pizza, remember this story: you're probably preparing the most expensive dinner of all time.
