The British government has taken a strong stance against the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, after it distributed sexual images generated by Artificial Intelligence, including content featuring women and children.
According to British officials, these images were produced through the integrated artificial intelligence tool, Grok, and are considered not only inappropriate, but potentially illegal under UK online safety legislation.
In early January, Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, opened a formal investigation into the X platform to assess whether the social network had broken the law, which requires the platform to protect users from illegal content, including sexual images of children and non-consensual intimate material.
British authorities have condemned the use of Artificial Intelligence tools to manipulate photos of people in a sexual manner and have warned that, if X does not take effective measures to prevent this content, it could face sanctions ranging from large fines to the blocking of the platform in the United Kingdom.
For its part, X has attempted to control the situation by limiting the image generation function to paying subscribers only. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has reacted strongly, accusing the British government of attempted censorship and calling it "fascist."
The case highlights global concerns over user safety and the lack of protection for children against harmful images generated by artificial intelligence.
