Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has released a new letter from Erik Menendez that sheds light on possible abuse by his father, Jose Menendez. The letter, written eight months before his parents were murdered in 1989, suggests a painful history of abuse that could affect the Menendez brothers' sentencing review.
In the letter, Erik writes to his cousin, Andy Cano, saying:
I've been trying to avoid dad. It's still happening Andy, but it's worse for me now, I can't explain it. He is so overweight I can't stand to see him. I never know when it's going to happen and it's driving me crazy.
The revelation comes as the Menendez family plans a press conference in Los Angeles that will bring together prominent figures to express support for the brothers.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The murder took place in August 1989, and the two brothers, then aged 21 and 18, were arrested in March 1990 after confessing the crime to their psychotherapist. Their trial, which was at the center of media attention, included serious allegations of emotional and sexual abuse by their father.
Now, lawyers for the Menendez brothers have asked for a reconsideration of the sentence, citing new evidence related to the abuse. Gascón has expressed concern about the need to consider this new evidence, noting that the perception of sexual abuse has evolved significantly in recent years.
A hearing on the Menendez brothers' petition is scheduled for Nov. 29, making the case once again a hot spot in the debate over justice and the treatment of victims of sexual abuse.
