Manchester United and Tottenham fans have been warned to expect huge prices on drinks in Bilbao for the Europa League final. The message comes after hotel accommodation in the city that will host the final next week has increased by 900 per cent after the Red Devils and Spurs confirmed their tickets for the match.
Bilbao is expecting around 80,000 fans to descend on the Basque city for the event, as residents prepare for an “invasion” the likes of which they have never seen before, according to reports in Spain. And local retailers will be keen to take advantage of this scenario and raise prices to maximise their profits. However, the delegate of the Basque Consumers and Users Organisation, Kepa Loizaga, has criticised the practice, which has seen prices increase 7, 8 and even 9 times.
Loizaga called on bars and restaurants to “not sell beer for 10 euros,” as happened during the 2018 European Rugby Cup finals. Furthermore, he criticized the “disproportionate and excessive” pricing policy followed by many Bilbao hoteliers and also issued a warning to the city regarding the image it is projecting to the world. “We already know that almost all businesses operate according to supply and demand, both flights and accommodations,” he told the Bilbao newspaper “El Correo.”
"There are no limits on price increases or reductions. Everyone sells their product as they wish. What we are sending to the rest of the world is very negative." The two Premier League teams, who secured their places in the final after impressive victories against Athletic Bilbao and Bodo/Glimt respectively, will be looking to salvage their seasons at San Mames after poor performances in the league. Ange Postecoglou's side are currently 17th in the Premier League standings, with Ruben Amorim's men just one place above them in 16th. However, the road to securing a ticket and a bed to sleep on the night of May 21 remains extremely challenging, with fans paying thousands of dollars for travel and accommodation. But despite the costs, the fans are determined to "colonise" the Basque city.
