Rolando Maran has been officially introduced as the new coach of the Albanian National Team, with the major objective of leading the Rossoneri towards "RURO 2028". The Italian technician joins the list of coaches from across the Adriatic who have managed Albania, while in Italy, analyses of his profile and career continue.
"Tuttomercatoweb" journalist Gaetano Moçiaro commented for "Panorama Sport" on the 62-year-old's journey in Italian football, evaluating his most successful period, but also the decline of recent years.
According to Moçiaro, the peak of Maran's career was between 2012 and 2019, a period in which his teams stood out for quality football and positive results.
" I saw Catania and his Cagliari up close and they played really beautiful football. He also did an excellent job at Varese, where he took the team in the eighth week at a difficult moment and brought it very close to promotion to Serie A ," said the Italian journalist.
Mociaro recalled that Varese only lost in the final to Sampdoria, while emphasizing that the club has not played in the Italian elite since the 1974-1975 season and today plays in Serie D.
Another important moment in Maran's career was the adventure with Catania, where he set the club's record for points in a single season in Serie A. According to the journalist, that team had a spectacular playing style, especially in home matches, with players like Papu Gomez, Barrientos and Bergesio. That team also included Albanian striker Edgar Çani, although with limited space.
Mociaro also gave positive evaluations for the period at Kievo, where Maran managed to ensure survival in several seasons, despite a limited budget and a lack of great support from the fans.
Meanwhile, at Cagliari, he recalled the impressive start to the 2019 season, when the Sardinian team was dreaming of a place in the Champions League.
" Cagliari played very good football with the 4-3-1-2 formation. But after the dramatic loss to Lazio in extra time, everything changed. The team went into crisis and Maran was fired. From that moment on, his career began a gradual decline ," said Mociaro.
According to him, the Italian coach no longer achieved significant results and left the Italian football elite, later managing Serie B teams such as Pisa and Brescia.
Regarding the challenge at the helm of Albania, the Italian journalist considers Maran's appointment a question mark, mainly due to his lack of experience outside of Italy and the fact that he has always been a coach focused on daily work with clubs.
" Maran has always been a field coach and has never worked outside Italy. The first impact may be difficult. However, he has the advantage that many Albanian players are active in Italy, which could help him ," said Moçiaro.
He added that the experiences at Catania and Cagliari could help the Italian coach cope with the pressure of the Albanian fans, which he described as passionate and demanding.
" My main concern is the fact that for several years he has been out of the circulation of important names in Italian football and perhaps his arrival in Albania comes somewhat late ," concluded the Italian journalist.
