Southampton have been banned from the Premier League play-off final after being accused of spying on rivals. The decision was made official on Tuesday by the EFL disciplinary committee, which confirmed that the club had breached competition rules.
As a result, Southampton's place in the final against Hull City will be taken by Middlesbrough, the team that had also filed an official complaint about the incident.
In addition to being excluded from the final, the commission has also severely punished the English club, imposing a four-point penalty for the next season in the Championship.
According to reports, Middlesbrough had presented photographic evidence which, according to the club, showed that a Southampton analyst had gathered information on the team's organisation and performance during training.
The incident was made public just two days before Middlesbrough's loss to Southampton in the final, with club officials saying they felt hurt by the situation.
Despite the controversy, Middlesbrough continued normal preparations, and will now have the opportunity to play the decisive final for a place in the elite of English football.
