Luis Meintjes and Antonio Pedrero have abandoned cycling's Tour de France after a massive crash in the first kilometers of stage 14 that halted the race to allow 30 cyclists to receive medical attention. The massive crash occurred 6km from the start, when the peloton stretched out amid a flurry of early attacks and counterattacks.
About 50 cyclists were stopped by the incident, which appeared to be caused by a sportsman slipping on a wet road corner. Stewards quickly made the decision to stop the race and the peloton stopped for 29 minutes before the race restarted.
Pedrero received medical treatment on the side of the road before being transported to an ambulance. The Spaniard was the second Movistar rider to drop out of the Tour after his leader Enrik Mas crashed on the first day in Bilbao.
Meintjes pulled out of the race with what he described on the radio as an arm injury. The Intermarché-Circus-Wanty cyclist had been 13th in the standings after two weeks of racing.
Maksim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny) and Matthew Burgado (Total Energies) were among the many other athletes who received treatment for injuries sustained in the crash, but were able to rejoin the pack for the restart.
