Former Croatian defender, Dario Simic

Former Croatian footballer Dario Simic has been arrested by Croatian authorities, suspected of being involved in a corruption scheme related to the construction of a tourist campsite on the Croatian coast.

According to the Croatian news agency Hina, the former defender is accused of illegally obtaining building permits through bribery and illegal procedures. Croatian media have also published footage of Simic being led away in handcuffs by police forces.

Two other people were arrested as part of the same investigation: former regional tourism official Neda Livljanić, as well as a local businessman, who are suspected of having collaborated in carrying out the scheme.

The case concerns the construction of a campsite in Tisno, a coastal town near Split. According to investigators, the facility was built in violation of legislation, as part of the territory was not intended for construction and did not meet urban planning criteria.

The prosecution alleges that during 2020-2021, former official Livljanić approved the necessary permits for the construction of the campsite, despite the violations found, in exchange for illegal benefits.

Investigations are ongoing and Croatian authorities are gathering evidence to fully elucidate the suspected corruption scheme. Up to this stage, there is no court decision finding the arrested individuals guilty.
