Kosovo's Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, has declared the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government in the Government of Serbia, Snezhana Paunović, persona non grata, following her statement that, if she had had Slobodan Milošević's freedom of action, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo."
Through a public reaction, Sveçla described the Serbian minister's statement as a reconfirmation of the ethnic cleansing project against Albanians, emphasizing that this rhetoric represents the continuation of the policies of the Milošević regime.
" Snežana Paunović, Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government in the Serbian government, has reconfirmed what Serbia has never given up on, the project of ethnic cleansing of Albanians. In our era, this was attempted by its former boss Slobodan Milošević, also known as the Butcher of the Balkans. This language and this manifest aspiration is not new. It is a continuation of a state policy that for many decades has produced violence, crimes and attempts to eliminate Albanians from their lands ," Svečla declared.
The Minister of Interior announced that he has made the decision to declare the Serbian official persona non grata in Kosovo.
" As Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo, today I have issued a decision through which I have declared Snezana Paunović persona non grata, undesirable, with a permanent ban on entry into or transit through the Republic of Kosovo ," he said.
In his reaction, Sveçla emphasized that the era of ethnic cleansing against Albanians has ended and that Kosovo's institutions will react to any rhetoric that violates the country's sovereignty.
" The era when Albanians were oppressed, massacred and ethnically cleansed has ended once and for all. The Republic of Kosovo is a sovereign and democratic state, with strong institutions that protect the constitutional order, territorial integrity and security of every citizen. Any attempt to revive the ideologies of ethnic cleansing or to threaten the Republic of Kosovo will be met with a firm, legal and institutional response ," Sveçla concluded.
The decision comes a day after the scandalous statement of the Serbian minister, who said that, if she had had Slobodan Milosevic's freedom of action, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo" in 1998.
