Former Inter defender Fabio Macellari has been sentenced to eight months in prison and a fine of 1,800 euros on charges of drug trafficking. The decision was given by the Court of Piacenza, following an investigation launched in 2019 by the Carabinieri of Bobbio.
Macellari, 50, who played in Serie A with Lecce, Cagliari, Inter and Bologna during the late 1990s and early 2000s, was found guilty of drug trafficking, while he was acquitted of two other charges.
Statements in court
During the hearing, the former player admitted to having used cocaine in the past, but categorically denied involvement in selling the drug. "I used it and I harmed myself, but I never allowed myself to sell it," he told the jury.
Even during spontaneous statements at the hearing, Macellari insisted that he had never sold narcotics.
Defense stance
His defense, represented by lawyer Monica Giuppi, argued that the preliminary investigation had not yielded concrete evidence of drug sales. According to her, the purchase of the narcotics was related to a period of addiction that Macellari had already overcome.
Return to prison and appeal
After the verdict was announced, Macellari was sent to Novate prison in Piacenza, where he is currently serving another five-year sentence for previous criminal offenses.
Meanwhile, an appeal against this decision has been filed and is expected to be reviewed at a later stage by the Court of Appeal.
