Two losses to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League have cost Real Madrid the loss of first place in the UEFA club rankings, a position that the Madrid team held for a long time.
The Bavarian team has now taken the lead with 146.5 points, while Real Madrid drops to second place with 144.5 points. This change comes as a result of performances in recent years in European competitions.
In the last two seasons, Real Madrid have collected 27 and 24.5 points respectively, a performance that has not been enough to maintain the lead. UEFA's system only takes into account the results of the last five seasons, excluding earlier achievements. For this reason, the Madrid team has lost the weight of the points earned during the successful period when they won three consecutive Champions League titles.
Bayern, on the other hand, have shown consistency in the European arena. This season alone, they have collected 38.2 points, reaching the semi-finals and winning 7 out of 8 matches in the league stage. In the last five seasons, the Bavarians have always been at least in the quarter-finals and on two occasions have reached the semi-finals.
Currently, the German team has the opportunity to advance further this season, but to secure the final they must overcome the PSG obstacle.
