On the eve of the Chinese Grand Prix in Formula 1, shocking news has taken over the sport. At the age of 76, Edi Xhordan, the owner of the team of the same name that was a protagonist on the circuit from 1991 to 2005, has passed away.
Jordan, from Ireland, had been ill for some time and had been battling cancer the previous year. In 1991, he gave a young driver like Michael Schumacher the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut at the SPA race in Belgium.
His car has been driven by many champions such as Rubens Barrichello, Eddie Irvine, another world champion Sir Demon Hill, Giancarlo Fisichella and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The last victory in Formula 1 dates back to 2003 with Giancarlo Fisichella at Interlagos.
In total, the team founded by Jordan participated in 250 races, winning four of them. The team's best result in its history was third place in the 1999 World Constructors' Championship.
2005 was his last year in F1 before parting ways with Midland, which later became Spyker and, finally, Force India in 2008. From the ashes of that team emerged the Aston Martin team, which currently competes in Formula 1.
The news was announced by the entrepreneur's family: " With deep sadness we announce the passing of Edi Xhordan, former Formula 1 team owner, television pundit and entrepreneur ."
Last year, Jordan himself publicly revealed his illness, encouraging men to undergo regular medical checkups.
