Miroslav Klose believes the 2026 World Cup could mark the end of his all-time record as the all-time leading scorer. The former Germany striker, who scored 16 goals in the final stages of the World Cup, has said he is fully prepared to see his name replaced at the top of the list.
In a recent interview, Klose particularly praised Lionel Messi, who has currently scored 13 goals in the World Cup and is only four goals away from the German's record.
"I believe this is the year my record will be broken. Records are set to be broken and I have no reservations. On the contrary, I would be very happy if a player like Lionel Messi achieved this. He is welcome to do so," Klose declared.
The Argentina captain, who led his national team to triumph at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, is expected to be one of the most watched figures in the upcoming tournament, which will take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The record that stands since 2014
Klose became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history during the 2014 World Cup, when he surpassed Brazilian Ronaldo Nazario's 15 goals in the famous semi-final against Brazil. Since then, no player has come closer to his record than Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
The French striker, who has scored 12 goals in just two World Cup appearances, is also considered a serious threat to Klose's throne. However, the German sees Messi as the favourite to achieve the feat, especially if the Argentine decides to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
The upcoming tournament is expected to be not only a football spectacle, but also a competition for historical statistics, where the ranking of the greatest scorers the World Cup has ever known could change.
