Lindsey Vonn was admitted to the intensive care unit at a hospital in Treviso, 127 kilometers from Cortina, after Sunday's downhill crash. Doctors operated on her for a fractured femur in her left leg.
The accident happened at the start of the race on the Olympia delle Tofane track. Vonn crashed into one of the gates, lost her balance and fell hard into the snow. Organizers transported her to the hospital by helicopter immediately after the incident.
The hospital announced that it would publish a medical bulletin on Monday at 12:00, but the announcement was not made public at that time. Italian media reported that the fracture required a double surgical intervention, with the participation of orthopedic and plastic surgeons. The local medical team performed the operation in the presence of the athlete's personal doctor. The doctors aimed to avoid complications related to inflammation and blood circulation.
Images of Vonn, 41, lying on the track and screaming in pain circulated immediately after the Olympic competition and brought to light the long history of injuries she has suffered throughout her career.
Ten days before the race in Cortina, Vonn tore the cruciate ligament in her left leg during a World Cup stage in Crans-Montana. She competed nonetheless, wearing a titanium prosthesis in her right knee from previous injuries.
A day before the race, Vonn responded to criticism of her decision to take to the slopes in these physical conditions. “ The answer is simple: I love skiing immensely. I’m not looking for attention or money. I know the odds are against me because of my age, my missing ligament, and a titanium knee, but I still believe. While I can’t guarantee a good result, I can guarantee that I’ll give it my all ,” she said.
The decision to compete with a torn ligament and a prosthesis in the other knee remains an issue under discussion following the accident. Her health condition is expected to be clarified through official announcements from the Treviso hospital in the coming days.
