The European Super League dies without being created, Real Madrid withdraws from

Real Madrid and UEFA have formalized an agreement that ends the open conflict that began on April 19, 2021 with the announcement of the European Super League. The parties published a joint statement confirming the restoration of the institutional relationship and respect for the current structure of European competitions.

The statement states that “UEFA, European Club Football Association and Real Madrid reach an agreement in principle for the good of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit and emphasizing the long-term sustainability of clubs and the improvement of the fan experience through the use of technology.” With this formulation, Real Madrid accepts the framework of competitions organized by UEFA.

The Superliga was officially announced on 19 April 2021. Twelve clubs registered as founders: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham. Florentino Pérez took over as president of the Superliga. The project aimed to create a direct alternative to the Champions League.

The statement of 19 April 2021 specified that “twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs” had reached an agreement to create a new competition governed by the founding clubs and that three more clubs would join before the inaugural season. The document also mentioned the expectation of discussions with UEFA and FIFA to find common solutions.

The project met with immediate opposition from UEFA, national federations and large sections of public opinion. Within weeks, most English clubs withdrew. Juventus pulled out a few months ago. Barcelona announced their withdrawal a few days ago. Real Madrid remained the only club to publicly defend the initiative until the final agreement with UEFA was reached.

With this development, president Florentino Perez and UEFA leaders end a five-year standoff that produced legal proceedings and institutional tension. Real Madrid continues to participate in competitions organized by UEFA, while the Super League project, as announced on April 19, 2021, remains suspended without the support of the founding clubs.
