The biggest match of the weekend in Serie A, between Inter and Atalanta, ended in a 1-1 draw, accompanied by strong controversy over the refereeing decisions. The championship leaders, Inter, claimed that they were harmed by the referee at several key moments of the challenge.
Some of these claims have also been accepted by representatives of the Italian Referees Association. Dino Tomasi, in the analysis made on the "Open VAR" show on DAZN, commented on the most controversial episodes of the match.
The first case concerns Atalanta's equaliser for 1-1, where Inter claimed a foul by Suleman on Dumfries. According to Thomas, the referee's decision was correct.
" There is no push. The hand is placed lightly and does not exert pressure. Even the contact below was assessed, but from all the footage it does not result in a foul. The decision on the field and the analysis in VAR are correct ," he said.
Another controversial episode was the contact between Scalvini and Fratezi in the Atalanta area, where Inter requested a penalty. The VAR communication acknowledged that there was contact, but it was considered light.
" The contact is there, but very light," the recording says, while the main referee Maganielo adds: " Yes, he touches it easily ."
However, unlike the first case, the Italian Judges Association believes that in this episode a mistake was made and that the decision could have been different.
" Magnaniello on the field says he touches it lightly, VAR supports his choice. In reality, Fratezi precedes Scalvini and is in the position to play the ball, takes a kick and this is a penalty. It could have been seen on the field, the VAR room should have intervened to review the footage from the main one ", said Tomasi, making it clear that for this episode, Inter were right.
