Carlo Ancelotti's position as Real Madrid coach is more shaky than ever after the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.
How long will he stay as Real Madrid coach?
The loss in the first leg against Arsenal will probably still be hard to swallow.
It's a heavy slap that Real Madrid received on Tuesday night in London. 0:3, a heavy burden for the return leg in Madrid.
The culprit? Carlo Ancelotti.
At least, if the international media are to be believed, even he himself. "It's a tough defeat, we definitely didn't expect it. The reaction the team showed in the last 30 minutes was very poor," Ancelotti said after the match.
"There is no doubt about my responsibility," the Italian continued.
Italian media are reporting that Ancelotti's future is in doubt. "Gazzetta dello Sport" writes that "the situation of Carlo Ancelotti, who has played 222 Champions League matches, one more than Arsenal, is becoming increasingly complicated."
The Spanish media are equally pessimistic. "No spark, no soul, no grit. A tragic evening, unworthy of a reigning champion," wrote Marca. Mundo Deportivo wrote of a coach "who is more challenged than ever after this heavy defeat."
There has been much speculation about Ancelotti's future in recent weeks. Although he still has a contract in the Spanish capital that runs until 2026, potential successors from next summer have been repeatedly discussed - such as Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso or Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.
Before the match in London, Ancelotti was even asked if people had had enough of the five-time Champions League winner.
"I don't know if they're tired of watching me - maybe," Ancelotti said - before adding confidently: "what matters in the end is that the most important person isn't tired yet."
This refers to Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez. However, Perez is unlikely to have had any desire for a long-term collaboration after the first leg of the quarter-final.
