Olympiacos achieved an important 1-0 victory over Kairat Almaty at the “Astana Arena”, keeping alive its ambitions to enter the last 24 of the league stage and advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The match was normally supposed to be played in Almaty, but due to the low temperatures there, around 2 degrees Celsius, it was moved to Astana where the temperature was -21 degrees Celsius!. It seems an abnormal move but there is an explanation. The Astana stadium, the team where footballer Nazmi Gripshi plays, is ultramodern and in addition to having a retractable roof, it also has internal heating.
So during the match, the temperature in the city was -21 degrees, but inside the stadium thousands of fans had gone to watch the match, which was being played at much more suitable temperatures.
The only goal of the match was scored by Gelson Martins in the 73rd minute, with a brilliant shot from a difficult position, after a move initiated by Muzakitis and a precise pass from Taremi. This is Olympiacos' first triumph at this stage of the competition, as well as their first away victory in the Champions League in ten years.
Mendilibar's team dominated for most of the match, creating numerous chances from the first minutes. Chiquinho, El Kabi and Martins himself threatened Anarbekov's goal several times, who made several crucial saves. In the 14th minute, the post denied Martins a goal, while El Kabi had two golden opportunities that were stopped by the goalkeeper.
In the second half, Kairat Almaty tried to react, but Olympiacos increased the pressure and completely controlled the game after scoring the goal. In the 76th and 79th minutes, the Greek team was very close to the second goal, but Tarem and El Kabi were stopped by Anarbekov and the goal posts.
In the end, Olympiacos managed the result and took three vital points, staying in the race for a place in the next stage of the Champions League.
