Elseid Hysaj is no longer a Lazio player. On June 30, the Albanian defender's contract officially expired, ending a four-year adventure with the capital team, where he recorded 131 appearances in the white and blue jersey.
Lazio's board decided not to offer the 31-year-old a new contract as part of the club's strategy to renew the squad and significantly reduce the wage bill. Along with Hysaj, Pedro and Toma Basic also left the team, whose contracts also expired on June 30.
According to Italian media, the departure of the three players will save Lazio around 9 million euros gross per season in wages alone. The club aims to continue cutting costs through the possible sales of Alessio Romagnoli, Ivan Provedeli and Mario Gilas, while the saved funds are expected to be invested in bringing in new players.
Meanwhile, Hysaj's future remains unclear. Unlike Pedro, who is considering retirement or a return to Tenerife, and Basic, who has reportedly reached an agreement with Venice, the Albanian national team defender is now a free agent and awaiting the right offer to continue his career.
The relationship with Maurizio Sarri
Elseid Hysaj's name continues to be mentioned in the Italian transfer market due to his relationship with coach Maurizio Sarri. According to Italian media reports, the technician, who is expected to take charge of Atalanta, is working to build the team according to his philosophy and the Bergamo club is closely monitoring the situation of Lazio defender Mario Gila.
Although there are no concrete signs of a reunion between Sarri and Hysaj so far, the fact that the Albanian defender is out of contract leaves open the possibility of a transfer to any club in the coming weeks. Atalanta remains one of the options mentioned for the Shkodran player.
After four seasons in Roma, Hysaj is preparing to start a new chapter in his career. The footballer himself stated a few days ago to "Panorama Sport" that he will initially enjoy a few days of rest, while then he will be in constant contact with his manager, who will deal with finding the next destination.
