French midfielder N'Golo Kante's move from Saudi Arabia to Fenerbahçe was accompanied by numerous difficulties, but was only finalized after the direct intervention of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Istanbul club officially confirmed the transfer, publicly thanking the Turkish president for his decisive role. Initially, the 2018 World Cup winner's arrival was rejected because the relevant documentation was submitted outside the deadline.
Fenerbahçe explained that Al-Ittihad officials had incorrectly entered the transfer data into the FIFA system (TMS), just as the transfer window in Saudi Arabia was closing. The Turkish club did not disclose the length of the contract offered for the 34-year-old.
" Some stories take time, but they never end. Welcome to Fenerbahçe, N'Golo Kanté ," the club wrote in a post on social media X on February 4.
According to media reports, after the transfer was blocked, President Erdogan, who was traveling to Saudi Arabia for a meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, used his influence to unblock the situation.
Fenerbahçe president Sadetin Saran also expressed his public gratitude: “ On behalf of myself and the club, I would like to thank our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his unwavering support, which enabled the successful completion of this process and will contribute to the development of Fenerbahçe and Turkish football .”
According to Turkish media, Kanté had refused to train with his team in Saudi Arabia, exerting pressure to complete the transfer, and then FIFA gave the final approval. The defensive midfielder's objective is to stay in optimal shape ahead of the World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
