The EU has responded forcefully to Russia's potential return to international football. European Commissioner for Sport, Glenn Micallef, responded to the latest proposals from FIFA President, Gianni Infantino:
“ Sport does not exist in a vacuum. It reflects who we are and what we choose to represent ,” Micallef wrote in X, warning that “ allowing strikers to return to world football as if nothing had happened is unacceptable” and that “not everything is negotiable .”
“ As Milan-Cortina 2026 approaches ,” he added, “ the EU must reaffirm its sporting model based on “responsibility, solidarity and respect for values .”
“ Public safety is important. Clarity is important. Symbols are important. Football sets the pace of global sport. Other sports, federations and EU member states have already expressed serious concerns about the possible normalization of relations with Russia,” Micallef stressed, noting that such decisions “must be taken through collective discussions, risk assessments and clear boundaries must be set .”
The Maltese commissioner called for unity "within the EU and beyond", inviting " fans, unions, associations and stakeholders " to join forces with Brussels "to set clear boundaries of what is acceptable in sport".
