Horge Vilda's time at the head of the women's team is coming to an end. The Spanish Federation (RFEF) has communicated this Tuesday to the current coach and technical director of women's football in the RFEF, his dismissal from both duties in the cascade of reactions that the "Rubiales case" has. It was the acting president, Pedro Roça, who informed the technician of the subject's decision, in a meeting held between the two on Tuesday morning at the headquarters of the federation.
The 42-year-old from Madrid thus ends eight years in charge of the women's national team, where in 2015 he replaced Injacio Kuereda after his periods in charge of the U-17 and U-19. And it does this just a few weeks after winning the most important title in the history of Spanish women's football: the World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
Despite the renewal offer made by Luis Rubiales last Friday, August 25 (four seasons at a rate of half a million euros per year), the current board of the RFEF, headed by Pedro Roça, notified Madrid of the termination of relations with the Spanish Federation. Spanish football leaders have made no secret of their desire to replace him with a female coach.
The controversies that have surrounded the coach in the last year, as well as the applause for Luis Rubiales during his speech in the Assembly (despite the fact that a few hours later he ended up appearing against the former president), have accelerated the decision.
Vilda belongs to the past, the third coach the Spanish team has had in its 32-year history. The man from Madrid (2015-2023) took over from Injacio Kuereda (1988-2015), who in turn did so in his time from Teodoro Nieto (1981-1988).
In his eight years as a coach, he has managed a total of 108 official matches with a record of 75 wins, 16 draws and 17 losses, as well as 310 goals for and 58 against, achieving a World Cup (2023) as well as an Algarve Cup (2017) and a Cyprus Cup (2018) - unofficial tournament.
