Enrique Riquelme, president of the Cox Group, is seriously considering the possibility of running in the upcoming presidential elections of Real Madrid. The news was announced by the Spanish daily MARCA , which reported that the businessman from Alicante is prepared to enter the race as soon as the electoral process officially begins.
According to sources close to him, the possible announcement of the elections did not surprise Riquelme, who has been following developments around the Madrid club for a long time. However, for the moment it remains to be seen when the electoral process will be officially announced by the current club leaders.
Riquelme is the main shareholder of Cox Group, a company with extensive activity in the renewable energy sector and present in over 30 countries around the world. His name has also received great attention in the international financial media due to several important economic agreements, including the acquisition of Iberdrola Mexico worth around $4 billion, as well as a $2 billion bond issue in the United States.
He has also been included in international lists as one of the most influential figures in the fight against climate change, thanks to his investments and projects in green energy.
In a recent press conference, current Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez made a comment that was interpreted as an indirect reference to Riquelme. Perez mentioned a “person with a Latin accent who speaks to energy companies,” while hinting that a new generation of businessmen could have a role in the club’s future.
Media reports suggest that Riquelme is backed by a group of young businessmen and Real Madrid fans, who could back him if he decides to make his candidacy official.
Recently, he participated as a guest of honor at an event organized by Real Madrid fans in Alicante, dedicated to the anniversary of “La Septima.” At this event, Riquelme shared the main table with well-known names from the club's history, such as Pedrag Mijatović and Fernando Sanz.
