Teammates bid final farewell to Diogo Jota

Scenes of deep emotion and national mourning are unfolding in Portugal, where relatives, friends, footballers and thousands of citizens are saying goodbye to Diogo Jota and his brother André, who lost their lives in the early hours of Thursday (03.07.2025) in a horrific car accident in Northern Spain.

The funeral service for the two brothers is being held in Gondomar, just outside their hometown of Porto. Since early morning, thousands of people have come for an informal, popular pilgrimage, lighting candles and leaving flowers in their memory.

Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso , appeared devastated outside the Chapel of the Resurrection, a few meters from the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church, where the private funeral is being held. Rute, whom Jota only married on June 22, after already having three children together, hugged relatives and friends with emotion, while some present carried flowers and Portuguese national scarves, paying tribute to the deceased.
