Who will reach Europe?
The fight for a place in European competitions hasn't been as exciting as it was in this Bundesliga season for 25 years.
There are just six points between current fourth-place Mainz 05 (46 points) and ninth-place VfB Stuttgart (40 points) in the Bundesliga.
Last year there was a 17-point gap between the same positions (4th Leipzig: 53 points, 9th Freiburg 36 points).
The last time things were this close was in the 1999/2000 season. At that time, fourth-placed Bremen (43 points) and ninth-placed Stuttgart (39 points) were separated by just four points – but that was a quarter of a century ago!
At that time, HSV and Munich 1860 managed to qualify for the Champions League. Kaiserslautern and Hertha in the UEFA Cup.
Bayern and Leverkusen fought for the title between themselves and in the end they were tied on points. But the Munich team had the better goal difference.
Everything still seems possible this season. Frankfurt, Mainz, Leipzig, Gladbach, Freiburg, Dortmund, Stuttgart – seven teams are still fighting for Champions League and Europa League places. Even Bremen (39 points), Augsburg (39 points) and Wolfsburg (38 points) are still within striking distance.
And then there's Arminia Bielefeld! The third-tier team caused the latest cup sensation this week. Arminia advanced to the DFB Cup final with a dramatic win over Bayer Leverkusen. If Bielefeld wins this game too, the club will actually play internationally next season. This season could hardly get any crazier.
Only Bayern (68 points) and Leverkusen (62 points) are fighting for the championship between them.
