FIFA is ready to implement a new idea, to do away with VAR as we currently know it. The president of the FIFA Refereeing Committee, Pierluixhi Kolina, has explained that an alternative to the current system is already being considered, to speed up the pace of the game and avoid controversies. The new idea is that of VAR at the request of the coaches.
Until now, VAR has seen the referees' questionable decisions on the monitor with replays and slow downs. He then communicated the situation to the judges, recommending a review of the case or a decision. That may change soon.
The new model, which has been tested by FIFA, gives the coaches of both teams the right to request a review of the footage. Such a system is regularly used in other sports such as basketball, American football or field hockey.
The objective is to have more effective play and fewer interruptions for long waits, which already make the game boring for those in the stadium or in front of the TV. Coaches will be given the option to call twice during the match, a variation that has been tested at the U-17 and U-20 Women's World Cups.
Kolina has made it known that this will not be an addition to VAR, but an alternative to it, which means that the current VAR system will change completely if the coaches' request rule is applied.
