The Wuppertal regional court confirmed the convictions of two defendants accused of blackmailing the Schumaker family. No new evidence or witnesses were presented on appeal, and citizen Yilmaz T was sentenced to 3 years in prison for attempted extortion, while former security guard Markus F was given a suspended 2-year prison sentence for cooperation.
The two defendants appealed the sentence given in the first instance court, requesting a reduction, while the Civil Court Prosecutor's Office also appealed. The Schumacher family was expecting a harsher sentence for Markus F, accusing him of stealing sensitive material while working in the champion's apartment.
The blackmailers had threatened to publish 1,500 files on the Darknet, including photos, videos, and confidential medical documents of Schumacher, who was seriously injured in 2013, demanding 15 million euros in exchange.
In the new trial, Yilmaz T chose not to testify, nor did his son, who was involved but not in the appeal, reducing the Schumacher family's chances of winning a harsher sentence for Markus F.
