Goal disallowed at the World Cup, Croatia asks FIFA for clarification on the
Croatia national team

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has sent an official request to FIFA, seeking explanations for several referee decisions and VAR system interventions during Croatia's loss to Portugal in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

According to Croatian media, including the newspaper "Sportske", the letter was sent just a day after the end of the match and focuses on several controversial episodes. The main case raised by the HNS is the disallowed goal by Josko Guardiola in extra time, which, according to the Croats, would have given the team an equalizer and sent the challenge to extra time.

The Croatian Football Federation has also expressed its dissatisfaction with the penalty awarded to Portugal after the VAR intervention. According to the HNS, the main referee was in a favorable position to judge the action himself and had not initially called it a penalty. Croatia claims that the VAR intervention was not justified, as the case did not constitute a “clear and obvious error”, which is the criterion for using this system.

According to the federation, in such a situation the referee should have been called to review the image on the monitor himself before making a final decision.

Another point contested by the HNS is the cancellation of Guardiola's goal for offside, after a minimal touch of the ball by Matanovic, which was evidenced by the sensor technology integrated into the official ball of the tournament.

The Croatian FA argues that FIFA's interpretation of the offside rule stipulates that body parts such as hair can only be taken into account if they actually affect the game, i.e. the movement or trajectory of the ball. According to them, this should only apply in clear cases and not for minimal situations detected by technology.

" We consider it deeply wrong that an almost invisible vibration, recorded by a sensor, could determine the outcome of such an important match ," the request sent by the Croatian Football Federation reads.

HNS has emphasized that the purpose of this request is not only to review the decisions made in this match, but also to create a clearer framework to avoid similar cases and controversial decisions in the future.
