Pep Guardiola could be one of the names being considered for the future management of the Italian national team. This possibility was left open by the Italian Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, who praised the Spanish coach as an important figure in world football and did not consider an adventure of his at the helm of the "Azzurri" impossible.
Asked about the rumors linking Guardiola to the Italy bench, Abodi emphasized that the decisive factor would not be the financial aspect, but the coach's own desire to undertake such a challenge.
" We need to understand if he wants Italy. There is a lot of Italy in his life journey and I believe in his feelings. It is part of the possible options, it is certainly not an impossible dream ," Abodi declared.
The minister underlined that managing a national team is a different role than at club level and that it remains to be seen whether Guardiola wants to face this challenge.
" He is a very important coach. The national team coach is a different profession and we have to understand if an exceptional coach is and wants to become an exceptional national team coach as well. In my opinion, it is a challenge that they want to take on sooner or later ," he added.
Abodi emphasized that the success of a national team does not depend only on the name of the coach, but on a broad and well-organized project at all levels of Italian football.
" I don't think it's about money, but about ambitions and dreams. A single coach doesn't make a national team; it has to be accompanied by a high-level project. It has to excite, as well as raise awareness ," the minister said.
He also criticized Italian football leaders for losing previous standards of success, calling for more cooperation between clubs, leagues and the Italian Football Federation.
" It must be an incentive to recover the thread of excellence that we have sacrificed due to the incompetence of the management class, both in the clubs and in the leagues and in the FIGC. We must work in an integrated way to achieve goals and collaborate. It is not enough to simply open the gates to fill the stadiums ," concluded Abodi.
