Hamilton openly admits: First season with Ferrari "a nightmare"

Lewis Hamilton is experiencing the darkest season of his career since his Formula 1 debut.

The British driver, now with Ferrari, retired from the Brazilian Grand Prix after just 39 laps, calling this year “a nightmare.” The race started badly on the first lap, when Hamilton was blocked by Carlos Sainz’s Williams and then damaged the front wing of his car during a dangerous attempt to overtake Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. The five-second penalty and injury forced the Briton to retire late in the race, finishing in last place.

It was the first time Hamilton had retired from the Interlagos race since 2012, when he was still racing for McLaren. For Ferrari, the disappointment is even greater; the Italian team failed to score any points in Brazil for the third time this season, dropping to fourth in the constructors' standings behind Mercedes and Red Bull. A complete failure for the "Redhead" who started the year with great ambitions and promises of a return to glory.

Hamilton, who has not achieved a podium this year, described the situation as "a difficult and demanding period". He told Sky Sports: " It's a nightmare, I've been going through it for a few weeks. Going from the dream of racing with Ferrari to the results we've had is hard to swallow ."

However, in an interview with Viaplay, the Briton was more optimistic: " It would be a mistake to deny the positive aspects. Leclerc's performances show that the car has pace. We just have to push and give everything we have. I still believe in this team ."

Hamilton will have his next chance to return to form at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which takes place on November 23. For Ferrari and its fans, any result less than a podium would be confirmation of a disastrous season.
