Just 12 days ago, Diogo Zhota and Rute Cardoso experienced what they called "a dream come true." After more than a decade of love, they said "I do" in their hometown of Porto, crowning a story that had begun in high school.
It was an unforgettable day, filled with smiles, hope and plans for the future. Today, the 28-year-old newlywed faces a reality no one could have imagined: a life without her childhood sweetheart, with their three young children in her arms.
The fatal Thursday claimed the lives of Diogo and his brother, André Silva. The Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off the road in the province of Zamora and burst into flames, instantly extinguishing two young lives full of dreams. Their wedding photos are still fresh, memories of a beginning that turned tragically into an end.
Diogo and Rute's story was a true journey of coexistence, support and love. They met as teenagers in high school in Porto and started dating in October 2012. Since then, Rute has been by Diogo's side every step of the way; when he made his debut in the first team of Paços de Ferreira at the age of 18, when he signed for Atletico Madrid at the age of 20, when he moved forward in his career, always with shared dreams.
In 2020, their lives took a new turn. Just a month before Diogo joined Liverpool, they shared the news that they were expecting their first child. In February 2021, their son Dinis was born. A few years later, in March 2023, the family expanded with another son, Duarte. In November 2024, their happiness was completed with the birth of a daughter.
Rute often shared moments from their lives with followers on social media: the cheers in the stadium for Diogo, the happiness of the little ones, the daily life of a family that seemed blessed. The crowning of this love came on June 22, 2025, in a ceremony that Diogo described as "a day we will never forget."
But today, memories are all that remains. A rare love story, which, although tragically and painfully cut short, will live forever in the hearts of those who knew it. A pure, true love, that neither time nor loss can erase.
