Liverpool striker Diogo Zhota has died in a car accident, along with his brother Andre, also a professional footballer.
The brothers died when their car veered off the road and burst into flames shortly after midnight. They were in the Spanish province of Zamora, where Diogo Zhota was on holiday after his wedding 12 days earlier.
According to witnesses, the car was engulfed in flames.
Eyewitnesses immediately notified the emergency services, but firefighters, members of the Civil Guard traffic unit, ambulance and medical staff from the Mombuey health center confirmed the death of the two footballers upon arrival.
As the football world bids farewell to Zhota, few people know that this was not actually his surname. His full name is Diogo José Teixeira da Silva. As a child, Diogo wanted to stand out from all the other Diogos and Silvas who played football with him at the academy.
Because of this, he began calling himself Diogo J., with “Jota” referring to the Portuguese pronunciation of the letter “J.” So Diogo kept his word and wore Diogo J. on his jersey for most of his career, and the world misremembered the surname he had given himself.
Zhota married his partner, Rute Cardoso, two weeks ago. They had been together since 2012 and Zhota proposed to her in July 2022.
Sharing photos from the wedding on social media, the former Liverpool striker wrote: "June 22, 2025. Yes, forever." The couple had three children. Diogo's brother, Andre, played for Portuguese second division club Penafiel. /Telegraph
