Alessandro “Alex” Zanardi, the former Formula 1 driver and one of the most famous figures in Paralympic sports in the world, has died. The news was made public by his family in an official statement. Zanardi was 59 years old and would have celebrated his 60th birthday in October. He was born in Bologna, Italy.
The official statement states:
" With deep sorrow, the family announces the passing of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred unexpectedly yesterday evening, May 1st. Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family. The family thanks all those who are expressing condolences and asks for respect for the pain and privacy in this moment of mourning ."
A life of challenges and comebacks
Zanardi's life was marked by great challenges. In 2001, he suffered a serious car accident that led to the amputation of both legs. After this event, he returned to sports, this time in Paralympic cycling, where he achieved extraordinary success.
At the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, he won four gold medals and two silver medals, as well as a number of world titles, becoming one of the most successful athletes in this discipline.
In 2020, Zanardi was involved in another serious accident during a charity handbike race in Italy. Since then, his health has remained fragile.
Beyond his sporting results, he was considered a key figure in the promotion and development of Paralympic sport at the international level, contributing to increased attention and respect for this category of athletes.
Known for his strength, optimism and humor even in the most difficult moments, Zanardi left a deep mark on sport and society. He was often described as "the champion who turned pain into strength."
He leaves behind his wife Daniela and their son, Nikolo.
