Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has stressed the need for a balance between defense and attack, using the spectacular match between PSG and Bayern as a reference. Ahead of the next challenge in the championship, he underlined that success does not only depend on the number of goals scored, but also on stability in the back.
Kovac admitted that the match between the two European giants had caught his attention, but he saw it from two different perspectives:
" First of all, from a neutral spectator's perspective, it was sensational, I liked it, especially in the offensive aspect. But when you watch it as a coach, I don't know how my heart would beat ."
He added that results with many goals conceded are not desirable:
" You can't win all the games 5-4 ."
According to the coach, although the attack remains a key element, the team must maintain a solid defensive structure:
" I can understand those who say: Attack is important. And that's what we want too. We want to score a lot of goals ."
However, the objective is twofold: To score as many goals as possible and to concede as few as possible.
Kovac argues that the difference in rankings often comes from defense:
" If you look at it, you notice that the top teams, with the exception of Bayern, have all scored around 60 to 65 goals. The difference between us and the teams behind us is the number of goals we have conceded ."
The coach emphasized the importance of high pressure and working without the ball, taking the match against Freiburg as an example:
" We need pressure situations, especially in our stadium. We showed that against Freiburg ."
He praised the players' commitment in this regard:
" We need to continue working hard without the ball, then we will have many more opportunities going forward ."
Kovac described the performance against Freiburg as one of the best of the season:
" It was very dominant, very intense, very aggressive. We defended high up the pitch, kept the opposition away from our goal and created some very good situations ."
