A cable car incident has resulted in the death of one of the German footballers. The incident occurred at the Savin Kuk tourist resort in Montenegro.
Sebastian Hertner fell from a height of about 70 meters, losing his life on the spot, while his wife was injured.
According to initial reports, two chairlifts broke free from their cables and collided with the seat behind them, where Hertner was.
His wife, 30, was trapped in the chair and was rescued by emergency services while she suffered a broken leg and was taken for medical treatment.
It is also reported that at least three other tourists were trapped in the cable car chairs for several hours. Rescue teams managed to get them down safely, without serious health consequences.
Sebastian Hertner was a product of the VfB Stuttgart academy and during his 16-year professional career played for several clubs in the second and third divisions of German football.
Most recently, he held the captain's armband at ETSV Hamburg, a team that competes in the Oberliga, the fifth tier of German football.
"It is with great sadness that we announce today that our captain, Sebastian Hertner, has passed away in a tragic accident during the holidays. We are shocked and extremely saddened. Our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, Sebastian," ETSV Hamburg wrote on social media.
Even the club's manager, Jan-Philipp Rose, reacted with a touching message.
"You were so much more to me than just my captain. You were a friend, a role model, and a person who shaped us all. Your sudden death has deeply shocked us," Rose wrote.
In his international career, Hertner played as a full-back and played 14 games for the German U-18 team, as well as five games for the U-19 team.
