Former doctor testifies in court about Maradona's death: He should have

A doctor testified Tuesday in the trial of seven health professionals accused of negligence in the death of Diego Maradona. According to him, the Argentine football legend should have been admitted to a rehabilitation center instead of returning home after head surgery, which he underwent in 2020. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, after being discharged from the hospital, at his home in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.

He should have gone to a rehabilitation clinic…, to a more protected place for him,” Mario Alejandro Shiter, who has treated Maradona for two decades, told the court. “Knowing the patient, I would not have suggested home confinement. It was not easy to manage, given my direct knowledge of the worst moments of his life ,” added Shiter, who had treated Maradona for drug addiction.

According to the indictment, the seven professionals accused of negligence - a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, doctors and nurses - failed to provide adequate care, which may have caused his death. Shiter said he was a consultant and had no authority to make decisions:

" The clinic directors finally came and told me they had chosen to admit Diego home ."

According to several witnesses in the trial, the house where Maradona was taken lacked the necessary medical equipment. Shiter, who was also present during the autopsy of Maradona's body, said that "all the evidence suggests that he was not provided with adequate medical care, which led to heart failure."
