The former attacker of Ajax and the Netherlands, Quinci Promes, has been sentenced to 6 years in prison, on charges of drug trafficking.
The 32-year-old footballer, who is currently part of Spartak Moscow in Russia, has denied the allegations and said he will appeal the decision.
According to the media, the Amsterdam prosecutor's office had gathered enough evidence to confirm the involvement of the Dutch attacker in the trafficking of more than a ton of cocaine from the Belgian port of Antwerp to the Netherlands.
The 32-year-old was not present in court to hear his sentence. Previous attempts to extradite him from Moscow to Amsterdam have failed. The agreement between the Netherlands and Russia to extradite the footballer has not been reached and Promes can escape punishment because he can be equipped with a Russian passport.
The prosecutors asked for a sentence of 9 years of imprisonment, but the court decided to reduce the sentence to 6 years, seeing the decision of the Prosecutor's Office as too harsh.
He has 50 matches with the Netherlands shirt and 7 goals scored in the period 2014-2021, since then he has not collected any more.
