Morocco's elimination from the 2026 World Cup has caused tensions in some areas of London, where on Thursday evening there were clashes between police and crowds of fans.
France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals, ending the African team's run at the tournament for a second consecutive World Cup. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé secured Les Bleus' qualification for the semi-finals.
After the match, the main concerns were about the situation in Paris, where many feared protests or riots, especially after the chaotic scenes that followed the celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain fans after the Champions League triumph in May.
However, tensions were evident in London. Footage released from the Edgware Road area, northwest of the British capital, showed clashes between police forces and large groups of people. Smoke, debris and discarded objects were seen on the street, as police used protective equipment to control the crowds.
Police, equipped with shields and protective vests, attempted to disperse the crowds, while some people threw fireworks and various objects. A video also appeared to show a police officer lying on the ground, although his condition or the circumstances of his injury are unknown.
During the clashes, some fans waved Moroccan flags in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic. Others even climbed onto vehicles trying to pass through the area.
In contrast to London, Paris did not experience the same level of tension. In the French capital, French and Moroccan fans took to the streets to celebrate, creating an atmosphere that was more festive than confrontational. In some areas of the city, vehicles were driven around with the flags of both countries and fans celebrated together.
France's victory came thanks to goals from Mbappé and Dembélé, while the Real Madrid striker reached his eighth goal tally in this World Cup, equaling Lionel Messi's record for the highest number of goals in the tournament.
France secured their third consecutive appearance in the World Cup semi-finals, while Morocco, despite being eliminated, made history by becoming the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup more than once.
With Morocco eliminated, there are no more African teams in contention for the trophy. France will now face the winner of the match between Spain and Belgium in the semi-finals.
Following Morocco's exit from the World Cup in the US, some football fans confronted the police in and around London's Edgware Road.
