The conflict in the Middle East, which pits Israel against Lebanon and Iran, also threatens the normal development of the Asian Champions League. Al Nasri of Saudi Arabia, whose big "star" is the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, is planning to ask the Asian Football Confederation that the match against Esteghlal, scheduled to be played on October 22, in Tehran, the capital of Iran, to move to a neutral territory.
" We are monitoring the situation and will work in the coming days to move the match to a neutral ground ," an Al Nasri source told Al Rijadija. However, that source specifies that no official request has yet been made to move the match:
" We have not yet submitted an official request to the Asian Confederation to move the long-awaited continental clash ."
In 2016, the Asian Confederation decided that matches between Saudi and Iranian clubs would be played on neutral ground, a measure that remained in effect until the last edition of the Champions League, when the Saudis and Iranians were again able to play in their stadiums. In that period, Saudi Arabian teams chose Qatar to play their matches, while Iranian clubs chose Muscat, the capital of Oman, and Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
Al Nasri made his debut in this edition of the Asian Champions League with a 1-1 draw at Iraqi transfer Al Shorta, in a match that Cristiano Ronaldo did not play. In the second round, the Portuguese scored the winning goal against Al Rajan of Qatar (2-1).
The Saudi team is fourth in the western zone, with four points, two less than Al Hilal and Al Ahli, and one more than Esteghlal, its next rival.
