After the end of the match that ended Atletico Madrid's adventure in the Champions League, José Luis Martinez-Almeida did not spare criticism of UEFA and the refereeing of the match.
" When I saw the draw, I thought we would face Arsenal, but I was wrong because we had UEFA in front of us ," he declared.
According to the mayor of Madrid, the European body aimed to eliminate the Spanish team from the competition.
" UEFA made it clear that they did not want Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final. There were decisions that clearly showed the intention to harm Atletico ," Almeida said.
He added that Atletico fans should feel proud of the team, despite the elimination.
" Atletico fans are proud of our team because they did not compete against Arsenal, but against UEFA. You can beat Arsenal for 180 minutes, but you cannot beat UEFA ," he further declared.
In the end, Almeida also accused the match referee, considering it part of a predetermined scenario against the Madrid club.
" UEFA put all its mechanisms at their disposal so that Atletico would not go through, and the referee was the executor of this goal. Everything was on purpose. We could not defeat UEFA, and it was impossible to do so ," he concluded.
