As this year's World Cup approaches, debates over the skyrocketing ticket prices continue to intensify. Recently, even the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has publicly reacted by criticizing the fees set for the tournament's matches.
In a phone interview with the New York Post, Trump expressed surprise that tickets for the opening match between the United States and Paraguay cost up to $1,000.
" I was not aware of that figure. I would have liked to have been, but to tell you the truth, I wouldn't have paid that figure either ," the US president declared.
The U.S. national team will play its first World Cup match on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, against Paraguay. According to reports, ticket prices for this match start at $1,000.
Trump said he would check on the situation, while expressing his disappointment at the inability of many Americans to closely follow the World Cup matches.
" I haven't received the news yet, but I'll have to take a look ," he said.
The American president emphasized the fact that high prices are excluding a large part of the American working class, which he also considers his electoral base.
" I would love for the people who voted for me to have the opportunity to be there ," Trump said.
However, he underlined that despite the controversy over tickets, the World Cup is proving to be a great success for the organizers and the public's interest.
